The Fall by Rhye

Can’t. Stop. Listening. To. This. Record. Could this be my favorite album of 2013?

Two Headed Boy / The Fool by Neutral Milk Hotel

Jeff Mangum ceases to be indie rock’s JD Salinger - Neutral Milk Hotel reunion is officially on according to Pitchfork.

Line forming at Record Surplus in Santa Monica - still relatively short (but parking is a pain).

Accidental Racist by Brad Paisley (feat. LL Cool J)

LL Cool J dispels that myth that just because you’re a minority you have something intelligent to say about racism. This song, as ridiculous as it seems, sadly captures the lack of depth in most people’s thinking about race in the present day. Then again, it’s probably really difficult to sing about systemic inequalities and White privilege - so let’s sing about do rags, gold chains, and red flags instead!

Life has not been the same since I started wearing this fanny pack (bum bag, for my English friends). I first wore this at SXSW 2013 and now I wear it to Dodger games. I’ve given in to convenience.

I Wanna Dance (But I Don’t Know How) by SKATERS

NYC’s SKATERS might just fill the gap left by The Strokes post-Room On Fire by capturing that straightforward garage punk vibe that made the first two Casablancas and company records so great.

Husbands

Savages

Husbands by Savages

London band Savages’ first single. Powerful and bare bones - a thing of (aggressive) beauty.

SXSW 2013, Day 5

Savages savagely beat the audience at Easy Tiger into submission with their no bullshit, all out attack sound.  On their website they describe music as intended “…to remind us that human beings haven’t evolved so much, that music can still be straight to the point, efficient and exciting.”  If that’s their mission then all I gotta say is mission accomplished.

Savages seem to be the band that got the most critical acclaim at this year’s SXSW. Sadly, they didn’t reciprocate the love as lead singer Jehnny Beth said that this is their last time playing this “fucking terrible festival.” Looking forward to this group’s first full-length record, despite their lack of enthusiasm for beautiful Austin, TX.

Leave the City (Live) by Magnolia Electric Co.

Posting this in honor of Jason Molina. Thank you for leaving behind your beautiful songs. May you rest in peace.

SXSW 2013, Day 5

Parquet Courts rocked Mellow Johnny’s Bike shop with their Wire-like rhythms and controlled chaos guitar solos. This is a brilliant young band whose debut record is one of the best albums of 2013 (so far). These guys were easily my SXSW highlight.

SXSW 2013, Day 4
Vampire Weekend playing the Radio Day Stage at SXSW 2013. They played a short set of mostly older material, save for the set closer “Unbelievers.” New album comes out May 2013.
